ON THE MISCIBILITY OF SOME PALLADIUM-CONTAINING METALLIC GLASSES

The glass-forming ability was investigated for the ternary alloys of the systems Pd - Si - As, Pd - Ge - P, Pd - P - As, Pd - Ge - Se and Pd - P - Se by using the splat-cooling technique. The areas of glassy alloys are reported for these systems. The binary glassy alloys Pd4Si(am) (amorphous) and Pd4As(am), Pd4Ge(am) and Pd4P(am) as well as Pd4P(am) and Pd4As(am) are fully miscible, moreover, the glass-forming field is enlarged to the higher concentrations of the B-14 and B-15 elements. On the other hand, the glassy alloys Pd4Ge(am) and Pd2Se(am) do not show any miscibility. Although no miscibility was found for the binary glassy alloys Pd4P(am) and Pd2Se(am), an extended glass field was found at the selenium-rich concentrations (Pd - P5-15Se30-45). The stability of palladium-containing glassy alloys is discussed concerning the valence electron concentration.
