The movement #YoSoy132 in Xalapa (Mexico): the construction of collective action and the status of participation in a local context of heterogeneity and social conflict

Drawing on a combination of ethnographic work and a specific analytical model, this essay analyzes the complex process by which the movement "#YoSoy132" (#Iam132) articulated space for collective action and participation in Xalapa, Mexico. The first portion provides a general description of the national movement before moving to an examination of its particularities at the local level. Thereafter, the essay puts forth theoretical approximations that help explain the group's work at the conceptual level. In conclusion, it assesses the collective action as such and the state of participation taking into account the internal social relations of the movement.
