Massachusetts sends six million tons of solid waste to landfills every year. Of that amount, one million tons can be composted economically. Materials like yard wastes, apple pomace, fish processing wastes, racetrack manure, waste paper from paper companies and more. The article discusses how agriculture and environment agencies in Massachusetts aim to reduce landfilling by 15 percent and build new income source for many farmers. Five companies have already been identified that could compost more than 100,000 tons of organic waste materials each year. The first two companies to receive grants from the Federal-State Marketing Improvement Program were the Massachusetts Natural Fertilizer Company and BioCom Limited Inc. , and their work is described.
