ECONOMIC DETERMINANTS AND EDUCATIONAL FOR ESTABLISHING R&D CENTERS IN THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY IN PUERTO RICO

The R&D is a crucial activity for the process of innovation. The establishment of R&D centers by pharmaceutical companies involves a variety of strategic decisions. The economic burden of research and development of new products means that not all companies are in a position to support these costs. The locality of a state has a very important for the establishment of these centers function. The objective of this research is to explore the determinants that influence decisions to establish R & D centers by pharmaceutical companies that some of their production functions are located in Puerto Rico. The countries selected for the study were identified using the sale of the pharmaceutical companies that have a presence in Puerto Rico to establish the countries where they carry out their R & D process. The results show how R&D centers and manufacturing some are turning to countries like China, Singapore and India moving to the United States in this field. These countries offer incentives and have a number of economic benefits will result in competitive multinationals for their establishment advantages. Economic indicators show how these countries are developing positively. In conclusion if Puerto Rico interested in competing in the new global economy should direct their efforts to promote and develop a knowledge-based economy. This, because the new world economic engine revolve around knowledge assets, such as science, technology and research.
