IMMIGRATION AS A PHENOMENON IN CATALAN LITERATURE

This paper examines how the phenomenon of migration is represented in a collection of literary and journalistic texts from 1920-1939 and from 1964 onwards. In doing so, it considers the notion that there was no contemporary literature on migration at the time it occurred. While the subject was never so central as in Candel's study Els altres catalans [The Other Catalans], it did recur as a focus of concern in a series of fictional works, ranging from science fiction to neorealism. This was largely because the subject generated controversy around the social reality, and also because it gave authors a critical voice with which to address the reality of the time.
