Comparison of endovascular aneurysm repair with open repair in patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm

The aim was to compare elective open surgical repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) with endovascular repair by means of stent placement. Short-and intermediate-term trials have shown better outcomes of perioperative mortality and morbidity compared with open repair. Endovascular repair also results in a lower rate of systemic complications and a shorter length of stay compared with open AAA. Recent publications provide the first randomized comparisons of the endovascular and open techniques for the elective repair of abdominal aortic aneurysms. The question is whether the advantage of endovascular repair is sustained beyond the perioperative period.
