Leisure A Human Right

This article articulates a strong rationale for identifying leisure as a human right. The rationale begins by describing a moral vision in which leisure is a primary and crucial contributor to flourishing, the telos or life-goal of human beings. The relationship between the two constructs, specifically that leisure is necessary for flourishing to occur, justifies designating leisure as a right. Additionally, justice and phronesis are explored because the two virtues play important roles in protecting and promoting people's enjoyment of leisure. The article concludes by formally calling upon the therapeutic recreation profession to serve as a just institution with a focus on ensuring all people enjoy their entitlement to leisure.
