The microwave background radiation is a remnant of the early Universe. It is blackbody radiation with a temperature T(CBR) = 2.735 +/- 0.060 (0.017) K and no measured spectral distortions. It is isotropic to (DELTAT/T) < 5 x 10(-5) over all angular scales, except for a dipole component which is attributed to our motion with respect to the preferred reference frame of the radiation. A small-scale anisotropy has been detected towards a few dense clusters of galaxies that is attributed to inverse-Compton scattering of the photons of the background radiation by the hot gas that is responsible for the X-ray emission from these clusters. This is the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect.
