The present experiment was designed to investigate the psychophysiological responses to bird song, cries of gulls and human voice. The sounds were chosen to represent different annoying qualities. In a laboratory experiment sixty subjects were exposed to the three sounds of 40, 60, or 80 dBA. Heart rate, skin conductance, and electromyographic reactions were determined. There were differences between sounds in orienting and startle responses. Human voice was most orienting and least startling. Orienting quality of sound is expected to be relevant to annoyance.
