SURFACE-STRUCTURE OF THE SEMICONDUCTING RE6SE8CL2 CLUSTER COMPOUND INVESTIGATED BY SCANNING TUNNELING MICROSCOPY

摘要
STM studies in air have been performed to examine the (001) surface of the semiconducting triclinic Chevrel-type cluster compound Re6Se8Cl2. Topographic images (570 X 570 nm2) show atomically flat terraces with step heights of two lattice constants in the [001] direction. Atomic resolution was obtained on these terraces in the constant current mode. Corrugation amplitudes and periodicities could be observed that agree very well with known lattice parameters. Atomic surface defects could also be detected. Apparently the chlorine atoms which are exposed to the van der Waals surfaces are the species identified.
