Margin of text between reading and writing

Reader-response oriented criticism suggests that every text creates its implied or ideal reader. The actual reader, nevertheless, can decide to respond to the text more freely, occupying its margins and thus activating a space of renegotiation of textual meaning and hierarchies of discourse. The margin can then be subversive to the text and become a place where new meaning is produced, as is shown by many real or fictional marginalia.
