WHOSE IMAGINED COMMUNITY

The most creative results of the nationalist imagination in Asia and Africa are posited not on an identity, but on a difference with the modern West. This, however, is not brought out in a history of nationalism which focuses on the emergence of the post-colonial state. The possibility of imagining new forms of the modern community is suppressed by the overwhelming presence of the old forms of the modern state.
