What do the training supervisors of the Faculty of Medicine of Tours think of the experimental internship in external medicine?

Background. In 2007, the medical faculty of Tours recruited and trained trainers for a mandatory general practice training of 2 weeks full-time days concerning 104 fifth year medical students. A French organization subsidized the project in compensation of evaluations. This thesis aimed to assess the trainers' point of view. Method. Qualitative analysis of 4 focus group of trainers. Results. Trainers enjoyed the training and approved its mandatory nature. The training shouldn't exceed 2 weeks except to divide it up in order to avoid increasing too much the workload. Most doctors quickly integrated the student on their clinical process but few on the prescription. A lot of general practice specificities were passed on: pathologies diversity, patient's global approach, fee for service practice and social aspect. The trainers' initial training hadn't foreseen enough the first experimentation difficulties. Conclusion. This thesis gives useful lines to the good realization of this kind of training. It shows up initial objectives which are essential to the trainer's training. It's necessary to anticipate further formations if we want the training takes place in the best way.
