THE PACHYTENE KARYOTYPE OF THE PINK-BOLLWORM (LEPIDOPTERA, GELECHIIDAE)

The pachytene karyotypes of the female pink bollworm, as determined by three-dimensional reconstruction, and of the male pink bollworm, as determined by a spreading technique, are similar and consist of thirty bivalents. In the male and female karyotypes there is one heterochromatin knob and one nucleolar-organizing chromosome. No heteromorphic bivalent was found in the female karyotype even though sex-linked markers are inherited in a manner suggesting that the male is homogametic and the female is heterogametic.
