摘要
Since Salovey and Mayer (1990) introduced the construct of emotional intelligence in the literature, several researchers have analysed the potential link of emotional abilities with individual well-being and subjective happiness. Emotional intelligence defined as the ability to perceive, understand, process and regulate one's and others' emotions is seen as a critical skill that would help adolescents to guide their thoughts and reflect on emotions in ways that could raise their levels of well-being. In addition, the conceptual similarities and differences between the field of positive psychology and the framework of emotional intelligence are discussed. Recent research findings, obtained using abilities measures (MSCEIT), are also presented, highlighting the correlates and the consequences of emotional abilities for positive youth development. In general, results show that emotional intelligence abilities are related to happiness, social functioning and well-being of children and adolescents. Further, educational implications are presented and specific guidelines informed by positive psychology and emotional intelligence offered in the context of a positive and emotional school-based approach. Finally, the authors underline the importance of developing positive character strengths and socio-emotional abilities in the educational context.
