It is a common fact that dilution by the substrate of the hardfacing alloy can cause a decrease in the hardness and wear resistance of the deposited coating. In mosi instances it becomes standard practice to apply a second layer of hardfacing alloy. Research by the author into hardfacing grey casi iron to resist abrasive wear, showed that when the results from the abrasive wear and surface hardness rests, were statistically analysed there was in general no significant difference?ce produced by the application of a second layer. This finding has obvious economical consequence, because the application of only one layer would provide great financial savings.
