Biopsy under MRI guidance

Breast MRI occupies a growing place in clinical practice. MRI offers the advantage of high sensitivity, providing better detection of malignant lesions, but with lower specificity. According to the studies published to date, the proportion of cancers that are visible only with MRI reaches 14-57%. MRI-guided biopsy confirms the nature of the lesions detected only with MRI. Otherwise, since any lesion is not necessarily cancerous, it is vital to obtain histological proof to avoid unjustified recourse to surgery as much as possible. MRI's high detection level would be much less advantageous if it increased the number of surgeries for benign lesions. We first discuss the role of second-line ultrasound in the investigation of patients presenting a suspicious lesion on MRI. We then present the MRI-guided biopsy technique, as well as its complications, restrictions, and the associated challenges.
