A FULL-SCALE MODEL FOR MANUFACTURING EDUCATION

In cooperation with Arvin Industries-North American Automotive (NAA) Group during the spring of 1993, faculty of the Purdue University Department of Industrial Technology began a project to assist in the development of a ''simulated'' factory. This hands-on facility was designed to compliment a series of Arvin manufacturing courses for executives and middle managers of thirteen plants that supply major automobile manufacturers. Three faculty members from the School of Technology worked with Arvin managers and trainers to develop a vision for the new training center. The project resulted in the development of a model assembly facility, the design of ''simulated'' production equipment using both traditional and short cycle manufacturing layouts, and the development of course material for Arvin classes. This paper describes the project and presents the results of classes who utilized the new facility in July, 1994.
