We have measured PdL3M4,5M4,5 Auger shifts in Pd-Cu and Pd-Ag alloys and compared them with the corresponding M5VV shifts. The same valence band effects which distort the Pd MVV lineshape are reflected in deviations of the shifts of the corresponding 1G4 peak from the quasi-atomic limit. These deviations are manifested in comparisons with shifts of PdL3M4,5M4,5 core level spectra, which are well-defined and are naturally invariant in form. Therefore, in alloy studies true core-level Auger energy shifts should be employed. The relation of these shifts to electronic structure determinations is discussed.
