摘要
The use of stone columns is one of the many techniques presently used to improve the load-bearing capacity of shallow foundations in weak soil. A granular trench in a weak soil to support a strip foundation is a plane strain variation of the stone column approach. A number of laboratory model test results for determination of the ultimate bearing capacity of a strip surface foundation resting on a granular trench made in soft clay medium has been presented. The depth of the trench has been varied. The ultimate bearing capacities determined from the model test results have been compared with various theories.
