Fine needle aspiration biopsy is used routinely in the preoperative diagnosis of neoplastic processes in the liver. In the 13-month period from January 1988 to February 1989, 212 samples of the liver were analysed; among these, echinococcus cyst was diagnosed in 5 patients. The aspirates were taken using needles with the diameter of 0.6 and 0.7 mm. No intervention-related complications occurred in any of our patients during and following the procedure.
