A two-dimensional Galerkin formulation of the three-dimensional Oberbeck-Boussinesq equations is used to determine the onset of convection in an infinite rigid horizontal channel uniformly heated from below. Earlier results (Chana and Daniels, J. Fluid Mech. 199,257-279 (1989)) are extended to higher levels of truncation and to include modes of convection not previously examined. © 1990.
