Petroleum coke is a byproduct of improving and refining heavy crude and extra-heavy in so-called deep conversion processes. At present it is produced an excess of this product in the Petrochemical Complex "General Jose Antonio Anzoategui" so the use of coke was studied as a filter driver in drilling fluids based on water occurs. The coke was pulverized and sieved and through infrared spectroscopy (IR) the presence of aromatics, olefins and paraffins is demonstrated in it. By characterization was revealed that is has a total moisture of 9%, pH of 7.16 and a sulfur content of 5.35% which was treated and was reduced to 2.46%. Afterwards fluids were formulated based on water lignosulfonate type 9 lpg with concentrations of 1; 1.5; 2; 2.5 to 3 lb / bbl of coke, to which were the physical properties were measured by reference to the filtrate volume up to 14 mL / 30 min. It established a design of the randomized block three replications five treatments, which allowed using a statistical test ANOVA comparing fluids formulated with a fluid pattern (commercial lignite). From the study it can be stated that the formulated based of water in a systems maintained a volume of less than or equal to the established filtering (7 to 14 mL / 30 min) so it is concluded that coke is efficient as controller filtering based fluids water at concentrations of 1.5 to 2 lb / bbl.
