Background. Working in the accident and emergency department puts high demands on professional and individual competencies, resources and staff coping strategies as well as on the arrangement of workflow. Furthermore, this field of work is associated with a high risk of violent interactions. Aim. This article reviews the current research and shows that the phenomenon of violence in accident and emergency departments is widely documented and discussed internationally, but no precise knowledge about its causes and conditions has been identified up to now. Results. A methodological approach is presented that focuses on the different forms, motives, conditions, and dynamics of interactions influencing violent situations in the emergency accident department. Systematic documentation, typology and analyses using qualitative research methods are discussed.
