SYNTHESIS AND STRUCTURAL FEATURES OF S-BENZYLDITHIOCARBAZATE SCHIFF-BASE COMPLEXES OF ORGANOTIN(IV)

The organotin(IV) complexes with Schiff bases derived from aromatic aldehydes/ketones and S-benzyldithiocarbazate, such as S-benzyl-beta-N-(2-hydroxyphenyl)methylendithiocarbazate(H2L-2), S-benzyl-beta-N-(2-hydroxy-1-naphtyl)methylendithiocarbazate(H2L-2), S-benzyl-beta-N-(2-hydroxyphenylethylidene)-dithiocarbazate(H2L-3), S-benzyl-beta-N-(2-methoxyphenyl)methendithiocarbazate(HL-4), S-benzyl-beta-N-(4-methoxyphenyl)methylendithiocarbazate(HL-5), S-benzyl-beta-N-(2-furanyl)methylendithiocarbazate(HL-6), S-benzyl-beta-N-(benzoylphenyl)methylendithiocarbazate(HL-7), of the general R(n)SnL (where n = 2, R = C6H5, L = dibasic thio-Schiff base, H2L-1, H2L-2 and H2L-3: n = 3, R = CH3 or C6H5, L = monobasic thio-Schiff base, HL-4, HL-5, HL-6 and HL-7) have been prepared and characterized on the basis of elemental analyses, conductivity measurements and infrared, far-infrared, electronic and nuclear magnetic resonance spectral studies. Infrared spectral studies indicate that thio-Schiff bases behave as bidentate (NS) or tridentate(ONS) ligands and form rings through the thiol sulphur, the azomethine nitrogen and the phenolic oxygen. On the basis of the spectral data a distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry around the tin atom is suggested for the complexes.
