CCITT has recently proposed a set of possible ATM traffic sources, with extremely varying traffic characteristics, assumed to be supported by future B-ISDNs. For each such ATM source a smaller bandwidth than its peak demand may be assigned when a carl enters the network. This ''effective'' bandwidth concept could be used for efficient bandwidth management, routing, and congestion control procedures, thus leading to a better utilization of the network resources. The ''effective'' bandwidth depends mainly on the burstiness of the source, the burst length and size of buffer at the switching node. Various analytical models can be used for its calculation. The paper examines in detail their performance and suitability for the description of an ATM multiplexing environment.
