摘要
Objectives: Analyze all fractures treated in Traumatology and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of the West Parana University Hospital, as well as observe the rates of complications related to surgical and non-surgical treatment, thus contributing to clarify the best treatment of these injuries. Methods: 75 patients with condylar fracture were analyzed concerning etiology, age, use of safety devices, forms of treatment and complications related to the selected treatment. Results: 53 cases received a non-surgical treatment and 22 patients were handling with surgery with the complication rate about 15.1% for non-surgical treatments and 54.5% for surgical treatments. The most common complication was facial nerve paresis, responsible for 45% of the complications. Other complications: mouth opening deviation (40% of complications); malocclusion (20%); condylar resorption (5.7%) and salivary fistula (2.8%). Conclusions: It is possible to say that patients treated with non-surgical method have a long term post-traumatic recovery as good as patients treated surgically once initially they have a delayed return to the functions, however, they are free from risks inherent to surgery. Surgical treatment should be considered and the choice should be individualized to each case. (c) 2018 Sociedade Portuguesa de Estomatologia e Medicina Dentaria. Published by SPEMD.
