The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria is a major problem throughout the world and rational use of antibiotics is therefore very important. This study was performed to estimate the appropriateness of antibiotic use in Afyon Kocatepe University Hospital. Patients hospitalized between 1 December 2003 and 31 May 2004 were included in the study. Appropriateness of antibiotic use was evaluated using published recommendations for antibiotic prescription. A total of 279 patients received antibiotics were evaluated. Antibiotic use was necessary 84.2% of the patients, but in 44.3% of these, antibiotic use wasn't rational. On medical wards, rational antibiotic use was 74.6% while it was 36.7% in surgical wards (p< 0.05). The purpose of antibiotic use was prophylaxis in 52.7% and for therapeutic reasons in 47.3%. The total cost of inappropriate antibiotic use was 8 669 418 YTL in our hospital.
