COMMUNITY INTEGRATION OF MENTALLY-HANDICAPPED PERSONS

The author having been closely associated for 26 years with the rehabilitation needs of his only daughter, a case of cerebral palsy with mental handicap, reviews in this paper some contemporary views on community based rehabilitation and integrated education, examines the institutional facilities with respect to the special needs of the mentally handicapped and outlines the obstacles and limitations which are likely to be encountered in attempting community integration and mainstreaming of persons with mental handicap and the roles to be played by the parents, special educators, NGOs and associations of parents.
