摘要
Flaubert develops his novels with two opposite inspirations that encounter each other. One of these inspirations is lyric romantic temptation and the other is all the characters of realism. Flaubert explains his two different inspiration sources in this way:" In myself, in literary meaning, there are two different good men: one of these men is talkative, enthusiastic and has the capability of understanding every detail of sentences and takes them to peak of thinking, the other one is a man of pure realism who researches the slightest details and writes about them." "(A. LAGARDE, L. MICHARD, 1985: 456) These two sources of inspirations exist in Flaubert. In his novel "Madame Bovary" he used all the delicacies of realism just as he did the same in his novel " Salammbo". He prepared a huge documentation for this antique novel. The novel "Salammbo" covers all the lyric romantic features. The novel tells us the story of Matho, general of mercenary soldiers, who is desperately in love with the Goddess of Tanit Salammbo, the daughter of Hamilcar from Kartaca. Salammbo is the daughter of rich and powerful General of Kartaca and also she is the Goddess of Tanita. On the other side there is Matho, only a mercenary soldier. Because of the class discrimination the relationship between Matho and Salammbo is forbidden. At the end of the story the two characters can not be saved from the clutches of death and never come together.
