MULTICENTER STUDY OF THE ANTIHYPERTENSIVE EFFECT OF LISINOPRIL (20 MG) AND A FIXED COMBINATION OF LISINOPRIL (20 MG) AND HYDROCHLOROTHIAZIDE (12.5 MG) ONCE-DAILY IN MILD-TO-MODERATE ESSENTIAL-HYPERTENSION

The efficacy of monotherapy with lisinopril 20 mg once daily was compared with that of a combination of lisinopril 20 mg and hydrochlorothiazide 12.5 mg once daily in 149 patients with mild to moderate hypertension in a multi-centre randomised double-blind study. Eight weeks' treatment with the combination produced a greater fall in sitting systolic and diastolic pressure than did monotherapy with the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor. The proportion of patients who achieved the target blood pressure was similar in both treatment groups but a higher proportion of patients on combination treatment showed a fall in diastolic pressure >15%. Both treatments were well tolerated with few adverse events reported. There were no significant differences between the two treatments with respect to tolerability. The combination of lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide did not appear to have an adverse effect on sodium, potassium, glucose, or total cholesterol levels. The combination of lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide is effective and well tolerated in the management of mild to moderate hypertension. (C) 1995 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
