The German Migraine- and Headache Society published in 1986 recommendations for the treatment of migraine, followed in 1990 by a drug regimen for the therapy of tension headache. The present paper deals with the treatment of another primary headache: cluster headache. Based upon the classification and diagnostic criteria for headache disorders, cranial neuralgias and facial pain edited by the International Headache Society (IHS), an expert committee of the German Migraine- and Headache Society offers criteria for the definition, diagnosis and treatment of cluster headache which are applicable in clinical practice.
