Topography, properties and corrosion resistance of glow-discharge nitrided layer produced on OT4-0 titanium alloy

摘要
The effects of heat nitriding of an OT4-0 titanium alloy (97.4 wt% Ti) substrate on its mechanical properties and electrochemical corrosion resistance are discussed. The potentiokinetic polarisation curves of the titanium alloy in initial state and titanium treated in a 1:1 vol. N-2/H-2 atmosphere (800 degrees C) have been measured in acidified (pH = 2.7 and pH = 5.0) sulphate solutions. After nitriding, the surface of the titanium was investigated by atomic force microscopy. It is shown that nitriding improves the corrosion properties and microhardness of the outer layers of the material.
