This occurs through teachers who cultivate their own knowledge in research activities; post-graduates who also work with teaching and research reports which provide material for a modern course of literature . One important element is the possibility of building laboratory apparatus by utilizing equipment previously used in research . Good resources in research are; therefore; an important prerequisite for quality in basic education. The need for research in post-graduate education is perhaps more directly apparent . In the basic study program in my own subject; manufacturing systems; modern numerically controlled machine tools and industrial robots are used; as well as CAD/CAM systems . This would not be possible if the only funding was that from the Ministry of Education . Through branch research and funding from the Ministry of Industry; our research funds are about twenty times larger than they would otherwise be . This provides us with the necessary resources for most of our activities . Quality in education and research is hard to quantify. It can; however; be studied by observing how well the graduate engineers and researchers succeed in their professions . How well our students do at foreign technical institutes and universities gives us an indication of how well we compare with the educational systems in other countries . Responsibility for quality rests heavily on the individual teacher's pedagogical skills and judgement . Possibly; it could be an area of research to find quantitive expressions for quality in education and research;
