Because the metabolic status of the neonatal foal can deteriorate rapidly, speed is of the essence in deciding whether to undertake emergency abdominal surgery. The considerations for making this decision are discussed, along with indications for surgery for conditions affecting the stomach, the small intestine, the large and small colons, and the urinary tract.
