Assessment of alcohol intoxication and blood alcohol concentration (BAC) play a major role in forensic psychiatry. The classification of various stages of intoxication is difficult and sometimes confusing. In this review the importance of alcoholism and alcohol intoxications for aggressivity and delinquency in general is outlined and some open problems concerning classification of various stages of alcohol intoxications as well as basic diagnostic criteria in forensic psychiatry are described. Measurement of BAC alone is not considered to be a sufficient criterion and the importance of psychopathological symptoms are stressed, among others.
