CLINTON RESTRUCTURING OF THE SOCIAL SYSTEM

How far, and in what direction, does the restructuring of the social system under Clinton go? The >>Anti-Welfare<< State under Reagan and Bush had three main characteristics: the emphasis on individual wages and on the strengthening of the family instead of on social services, ecology, and culture; the privatization of many governmental services and the transformation of education into a commodity; and the emphasis on contracts instead of on charity. Fraser shows to what extent Clinton has changed these parameters and which groups of people lose out because of these changes. Finally, she develops the basic positions of a socialist-femnist politics.
