The article is devoted to the analysis of the evolution of the perception of the American Civil War in the Soviet and post-Soviet society. It examines the contribution of Soviet and Russian historical science to the formation of ideas about the Civil War between the North and the South. It regards the influence of scientific literature and fiction on public opinion concerning the phenomenon of the Civil War.
