Port site metastases after laparoscopic surgery of colorectal cancer: report of a case

Background: Port-site metastases supposed a regression on laparoscopy development during the last decades of the past century until the beginning of the millennium when it was proved that laparoscopic surgery was safe in oncological procedures and offered advantages in morbidity and mortality terms. Case report: We report the case of a 69-year-old patient with a laparoscopic resection of two synchronous colonic adenocarcinomas that had a malignancy suspected lesion in a laparoscopic port-site nine months after the surgery. The diagnosis confirmation was based on a biopsy that showed primary colorectal tumor cells. The staging study confirmed the cancer recurrence in lymph nodes, lung, surgical bed and laparoscopic port site. Discussion: We conclude that the occurrence of these metastases cannot be used as an argument against laparoscopy, because the incidence is similar to open surgery and lower than 1 %.
