An analysis is presented which matches a cogeneration system with a thermal load. Two parameters are developed, the cogeneration parameter, which should be selected near unity, and the hot water tank parameter, near 0.15. Selection of these values for the two parameters would result in near continuous operation of the cogenerator system with limited operation of the auxiliary hot water heating system during periods of high hot water demand and limited engine shutdown during periods of low hot water demand. Installation of the cogenerator system would be economically attractive when electric rates are above about 7 cents/kWh. Moreover, the economics of installation is independent of the price of natural gas between 30 and 60 cents/CCF.
