THE CHEMICAL-STRUCTURE AND THERMAL-PROPERTIES OF ALKALI ULTRAPHOSPHATES

Amorphous sodium and lithium ultraphosphates with M2O/P2O5 (M = Na or Li) ratios of 1.0-0.3 have been prepared by mixing 85% phosphoric acid and sodium carbonate or lithium carbonate and then heating the mixture at 400-700-degrees-C, in air and in dry nitrogen. The ultraphosphates contained combined water and the amount of the water increased with a decrease in the M2O/P2O5 ratio. When the ultraphosphates were heated in air, branching points in the ultraphosphates were hydrolysed to produce polyphosphates with shorter chain lengths.
