Rapid economic growth in East Asia is stimulating increased demand for air transport. One of the undesirable consequences of this growth is a high level of airport and airspace congestion. This paper reviews and analyzes five major approaches being considered to help reduce such congestion. These approaches are: (1) new/larger airports, (2) greater use of surface transport alternatives, (3) larger capacity aircraft, (4) improved air traffic control systems and (5) economic rationing of runways and airspace.
