The paper deals with the suitability of the social worker to serve as an educator for self-control. Self-control theories aim both to solve immediate problems and to develop preventive skills. By teaching clients self-control skills the social worker fulfills the aims of social work to help people use their potential and improve their quality of life. Self-control theories are presented, followed by a discussion of their adequacy for social work and the suggestion that self-control education could be the treatment of choice for the profession.
