Industrial catalysis is the cornerstone of today's chemical industry. It underpins the production of countless intermediates and products vital to society in terms of our standard of living and quality of life. For over forty years, I had the good fortune of participating in a few of the many exciting challenges and innovations spawned by industrial catalysis. A retrospective will be given on adventures that spanned both heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis, and impacted on the production of biodegradable detergents, acetyl chemicals via C1 chemistry and some important specialty chemicals. These adventures and innovations were punctuated by periods of challenge, suspense, excitement, exhilaration, frustration and disappointment.
