In this paper, I explore the field of public health at the end of life, describe what research exists in this field (in The Netherlands), and propose some priorities to be researched in this field, namely monitoring and improving the quality of care at the end of life. This paper is structured as follows: first, to understand the field of public health at the end of life, I make some introductory comments on concept and definition. Second, I describe this research field in The Netherlands. Third, I shall answer the question: from a public health perspective, why do we want to measure and know the quality of care at the end of life? Finally, I shall answer the question: what do we want to measure and know of the quality of care at the end of life?
