Prevalence and factors associated with burnout in anesthesiology Uruguayan residents

The burnout syndrome can be a relevant health problem in medical students. The anesthesiology residents are at risk of developing this syndrome, related to the stress lived at work. The goal of this study was to determine the prevalence of the burnout syndrome and its related determinant factors in anesthesiology residents of Uruguay. A survey was done between February to March, 2013. Respondants were all residents who accepted to participate in the study, coursing from first to fourth year of their residency. The Maslach Burnout Inventory was used to determine the presence of the burnout syndrome. A questionnaire about social and demographic characteristics and work conditions was also performed to determine the syndrome's associated factors. The complete burnout syndrome prevalence was 17.2%. There was a statistically significant association between burnout and yearly rest of less than 15 days (p=0.009), with an odd ratio of 0.8, confidence interval of 95%. Poor weekly and yearly rest were also associated with emotional exhaustion.
