AN ALTERNATIVE SOIL COMPACTION MODEL FOR CYLINDRICAL STRESS STATES

A number of models for soil compaction which relate density or specific volume to octahedral normal and shear stresses have been proposed previously, and involve four or five experimentally derived constants. Petersen has used his extensive triaxial test data for two soils over a range of moisture contents to compare these models. This paper demonstrates that a simple two parameter semi-logarithmic model will represent compression with accuracies comparable with those quoted by Petersen, when the parameters are derived from isotropic compression data, and may offer greater accuracies if the parameters are derived from data obtained from tests with a range of octahedral stress ratios.
