A NUMERICAL COMPARISON OF MORISON EQUATION COEFFICIENTS FOR LOW KEULEGAN-CARPENTER NUMBER FLOWS - BOTH SINUSOIDAL AND NONSINUSOIDAL

Numerical solutions have been obtained for a two-dimensional, viscosity-dominated oscillating flow past a rigid circular cylinder. The solutions are obtained in vorticity/stream function variables and forces on the cylinder have been calculated for flows oscillating sinusoidally and nonsinusoidally at Keulehan-Carpenter numbers of 1·02, 1·4, 2·4, and 4·8. Very good agreement was found between calculated and experimental force coefficients for the sinusoidal oscillations. As expected, the nonsinusoidal oscillation results did not agree with the sinusoidal results, except for the inertia coefficients which were essentially the same at the lowest KC values. The maximum dimensions force coefficient was found to decrease more rapidly with increasing KC for the sinusoidal fluid oscillation. © 1993 by Academic Press, Inc.
