An improvement of the energy efficiency ratio of air conditioning systems results when water-to-water dual-mode units are coupled to an aquifer of suitable characteristics which functions as a seasonal thermal storage. The evaluation of the system efficiency from a thermodynamic study is needed, to assess the interactions between the units and the aquifer. A comprehensive thermodynamic analysis is carried out in this paper. A procedure for a numerical evaluation of the system performance and optimization is presented in a convenient form for development and application of the system. A simplified method is also given for preliminary design purposes. © 1990.
