A variant of the H.P.P. lattice with a random initial configurations is considered. Under suitable assumptions on the transition probabilities, conditions under which the lattice model is formally closed to the Broadwell's model of the discrete kinetic theory are investigated. For a homogeneous gas filling all space, it is shown numerically that the "rarefaction" in the lattice drives an evolution close to that of the spatially homogeneous Broadwell's model.
